IMPORTANT NOTE: A student must submit the request for leave of absence/withdrawal in extenuating circumstances before the end of the term from which you are asking to leave/withdraw. In extreme circumstances, such as where the student is incapacitated or is otherwise unable to action the request within this timeline, SAIT may consider a request that is submitted up to 30 days after the end of the course.

Student Medical (This request type will be sent to Accessibility Services & Academic Chair for review & approval)

Personal Medical Leave provides the student time to address significant health concerns related to their disability, medical condition or mental health, that impact their academic performance. The duration and conditions are determined by individual circumstances and supported by medical documentation.

Family Caregiving (This request type will be sent to Accessibility Services & Academic Chair for review & approval)

Family Caregiving requires a student to take time off to care for a seriously ill or injured family member or to care for child(ren). Students are expected to try to access resources available to them before requesting accommodation and must attach a letter detailing the need for family caregiving and why alternate forms of caregiving are not possible.

Humanitarian (This request type will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

The student is required to complete a full-time humanitarian mission related to a student’s work with the provincial or federal government or with a non-governmental organization (NGO). The leave is usually outside of Calgary, and may be domestic or international.

Legal (This request type will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

The student is required to withdraw to meet legal obligations such as extended jury duty.

Military (This request type will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

For a domestic student to meet the student’s military service obligations as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces or for an international student to meet the student’s military service obligations to the student’s home country.

Parental (Maternity request will be sent to Accessibility Services & Academic Chair for review & approval while the others will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

Maternity, paternity and adoption.

Religious (This request type will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

The student is required to complete a full-time religious mission related to a student’s membership in a religious-affiliated cause. The leave is usually outside of Calgary, and may be domestic or international.

Personal Circumstances (This request type will be sent to Academic Chair for review & approval)

Bereavement, work obligations, family illness
Reasons other than medical, family caregiving, humanitarian, legal, military, religious or parental.

Extenuating Circumstances

For extenuating circumstances that includes, for instance, bereavement, caregiving and work obligations.

Leave of absence/Program Withdrawal might have an impact on your immigration status in Canada. We recommend to contact International Student Advisor either by booking an appointment or emailing international.advising@sait.ca before submitting this form to understand the immigration implications. We also recommend to connect with your Academic Advisor to understand your program progression.
